Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular

ATTENTION EVERYBODY THIS POST IS V. IMPORTANT OK

okay

today I attended the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on behalf of the lovely Selina as my birthday present. Doctor Who has this preconception amongst most people as a totally weird, old, fuddy duddy British geeky sci-fi show.

It is completely all those things.

Nah I kid, but anyway I absolutely love it. It is the best. I take complete shameless childlike joy and pleasure in watching it and obviously was incredibly excited for tonight. The basic synopsis is: a 2000 year old alien with two hearts flies around the universe in a blue police phone box which has the ability to take him anywhere in time and space.
It's not weird at all.

also the soundtrack is kind of amazeballs which is why there was an entire orchestra playing a show tonight
ya imma stop blabbin' now

walking through to the Plenary
there were tons of people dressed up in cosplay and semi-cosplay and whatnot
also: check out this dalek
feat. me

yea Selina mayyyyy have been just slightly weirded out
that's okay because as my belated b'day gift this day is 100% about me and 0% about you
(I kid again, srsly thanks Selinr)

this was how the orchestra was set up inside
I dig the Tardis just chillin' in the back

I didn't record that much cos ya I wanted to just pay attention to the orchestra
although I did record the first performance, and lucky I did cos it also happened to be the one most worth recording, there were choreographed monsters and full costumes and err'thang
like, Selina made me get up and swap seats with her halfway through because the monsters scared her
I don't reckon they're scary at all

I Am the Doctor
it's sort of like the unofficial theme of the show
swapping seats later turned out to be great, because I could simply leave the camera recording on the outside armrest of the chair
also I had a better view I guess

ALSO I was surprised to find out that Peter Davidson, who played the Doctor in like, the 80s was the host of the event?? like wow

pretty impressive costuming on the night, I was very impressed
if you are easily scared by people in costumes I would not examine these next images too carefully
(I'm mainly putting this warning here for you Judith haha)

like check that ish outtt
here's another performance that I recorded from the night, it's from when one of the companions leaves

The Final Chapter of Amelia Pond
I love the strings in this one and also the New York kind of swanky vibe
yea obviously I am great at describing things

ALSO DALEKS

these next ones are just a little creepy

at one point there was a Judoon (read: intergalactic rhino police) walking about and right next to me, the poor fella trips on the stairs and
falls over right next to me
it was hilarious

I just sat there and laughed and didn't really help him/her up
sorry
I'm a terrible human being

and then it was all over far too soon
alas
well, it was amazing while it lasted
definitely going to go to the next one

the final bow

outside, there was a bunch of Chinese New Year shenanigans going on

this is the programme I bought spontaneously, I wanted to have a memento
good thing too, it had the setlist and a poster but I'm super picky with posters so it's not hanging up on my wall I ripped out something else from the booklet oop too bad

we had a bit of a poke around the booths

and grabbed this takoyaki
I've never had superbly excellent Japanese-person approved takoyaki so I can't tell what's good, all takoyaki tastes good to me

Year of the Horse

this was the bowtie I got for today
grainy selfies

ended up inside Crown eating Chinese takeout, it was great

I actually had bought suspenders for today, but I coudn't figure out how they worked before heading off to the concert
like, it was crazy hot and I didn't want to be late so I was like screw that shit
but I figured it out when I got home

finished the night in the am sitting outside looking at the stars while listening to the soundtrack on my iPod
not a bad way to end the night

my bowtie collection is slowly growing

JO'S 20th

on this day (well the day after, technically) Joey turned 20

there was a game of basketball in the afternoon but I was a little bit late so I only missed the whole entire thing
since it was so hot I came just as everyone was heading into Chooi-ee's house to cool down a bit
we played Bang, and the good guys won
boooooo

check out Joey's funky leg pose

at around 6 we headed down to this cute Korean restaurant in Clayton
oh, funny story!
on the way down Judith and I realised our grave miscommunication about Joey's card
Judith had asked me to "draw something for Joey's card"
what I thought she meant was draw something to put on the card Judith had made for Joey
what Judith meant was to make a card for Joey

so I rushed into my house to grab some spare paper and was frantically cutting, gluing and shredding up paper into a card as we drove on the way to the restaurant
I can say that Judith was more than a little concerned that I was going to slice one of my fingers off
it turned out all good though

this was the restaurant, Hodori Korean Garden. quaint, right? traditional decoration and everything, I appreciate it

Judith and I were just a tad later than everybody else due to the card incident, so the appetizers were out already
or side dishes
I don't know the exact terms but Korean cuisine always has these side dishes to go with the main meal, like kimchi and other things etc etc

the birthday girl

other unimportant people who are not the birthday girl

read: same as above

fooood

my favourite, bulgogi
ate this when I was a kid, it's eternally my favourite Korean dish

jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles)
apparently this dish is good at this place?

spicy chicken thingy

SIZZLING PORK BELLY

I quite liked Hodori Korean Garden, the service was like...okay (putting it nicely). but the food and atmosphere was nice

couldn't pass up the chance to take some group photos on the way out
check out me doing The Creep in that last gif

after dinner we decided to head back to Brandon's house
grabbed a slurpee on the way, this makes Judie's 2nd slurpee ever
getting there

socks for him + her
Jess just came back from Korea and had presents for everybody
felt a little like everyone else's birthday too haha

I got this awesome Jake doll

hair curlers + Totoro

and funny socks

found this little robot interesting

not forgetting whose birthday it actually was, we gave Joey her cake and presents
I thought this cake was pretty awesome

green tea, and look at the fake grass haha
quality craftmanship, Bread Kingdom
good on ya

Joey's reaction to cutting her cake

we got her this Kpop CD set
my kpop knowledge is non-existent so I have no idea who TVXQ are
but if you know em then you'll probs be jealous of this CD set, it was signed as well

Translation, anyone?

check out this holographic business

Judie's face hereeee LOL
"u sAID WOT NOW??"

Caf came in from work bearing gifts of pizza

these socks were for her, due to her old obsession with One Piece and Zoro

Joey's reaction to her boyfriend's incredibly poignant gift of...

dog products

A+ boyfriend, upstanding, amazing, yas, all the things

this was the card I made for Jo
it has her two little dogs on it

circle of socks

for the rest of the night we just lounged around and chatted and played games
here's Wynne playing something
was it Final Fantasy? I don't remember
anyways

literally too lazy to sit upright and talk

Wynne stole my camera
she's a great photographer
like
srs

Settlers of Catan
I've not played this game but I've heard it can get preeeeetty competitive

chilled for a while and then called it a night   /o
(that's a thumbs up)
